Extended Exhale (4-7-8 Breath)
What it is A breath pattern where the exhale is longer than the inhale. You inhale for four counts, hold for seven, and exhale for eight. The exhale is the longest part — that's where the work happens.
What it does A longer exhale activates the parasympathetic nervous system more strongly than any other breath pattern. The body cannot remain in fight-or-flight while the exhale is extended. Heart rate slows, blood pressure lowers, and the system shifts into rest-and-digest mode whether you're trying or not. It's one of the most reliable tools for sleep — especially for travelers whose sleep is constantly disrupted by time zones and unfamiliar beds.
