Why I Join a Gym Everywhere I Go
I've maintained my lifting in all 20-plus countries I've lived in. Even back when I only traveled for vacation, I'd find a way in — a drop-in pass, a week pass, a hotel gym, whatever was available, especially if I was gone more than a few days. So when I started traveling full time, it wasn't really a question.
Because I slow travel, a month or so in each place, joining a gym makes sense. It matters to me that adopting a nomad lifestyle and seeing the world doesn't mean that I let my health slide. Not only has it been my number one form of mental health care, but especially with age — I'm just about to turn 42 — resistance training is crucial because it directly counteracts the loss of muscle mass and bone density triggered by declining estrogen levels during menopause.
I walk constantly, too. It's a great form of cardio, it lowers my stress, and it's how I process and think things through. It's also one of my favorite ways to explore a new town or city.
Here's how I make sure I always have a gym wherever I go:
Make it a factor in where you stay. Before I book an Airbnb, a gym within walking distance — or a short drive if we'll have a car — is a top priority, right alongside a grocery store. I sort that out before I commit to a place, not after.
Have one saved before you arrive. By the time I land, I've already researched and saved at least one gym to check out. It takes the decision-making out of those first disorienting days.
Make it part of settling in. The first morning after I arrive, I go scope out the gym and sign up. It's become a ritual that helps a new place start to feel like home.
Go month to month, and read the fine print. I haven't had trouble getting a single-month membership so far, but cancellation policies vary. Ask in advance, especially if there's a contract, and be upfront that you're only there temporarily.
